The asking prices
As of August 2026, PlaneFox lists 938 jets. 273 of them carry a published asking price, with a median of EUR 2,600,000 and a middle half between EUR 1,060,000 and EUR 5,890,000. The narrower private jet selection shows 768 listings, 227 of them priced, a median of EUR 2,470,000 and a middle half of EUR 1,060,000 to EUR 4,760,000. Typical build years on current jet listings run from 1983 to 2019.
Geography is concentrated. Of the jets listed, the United States accounts for 201, Brazil for 40 and Germany for 25.
Why so many jets are price on request
29.1 per cent of jet listings show a price. In the single-engine piston market on the same site the figure is 55.3 per cent, and for turboprops it is 40.0 per cent. The gap is structural rather than evasive.
Four things drive it. First, most jet transactions are cross-border and dollar-denominated, so a published euro figure would be wrong within a week. Second, the price moves with maintenance status: an airframe with a major inspection due inside twelve months and one fresh out of that inspection are different assets, and the difference can run to seven figures. Third, engine and airframe programme enrolment changes the number materially, and a seller does not want the headline price read without that context. Fourth, many owners instruct their broker not to publish, because a visible asking price that sits unchanged for six months signals weakness.
The practical consequence is that a jet search is a conversation rather than a filter. Expect to contact the seller for the number on about seven listings in ten.
Acquisition price is the smaller decision
Acquisition is a one-time number negotiated once. The annual fixed cost recurs whether the aircraft flies or not, and it is set by choices made after purchase.
Crew is usually the largest line. Most jets in this class are certified for two pilots, and a private owner either employs two full-time crew or contracts them. Recurrent simulator training is typically annual and priced per pilot per type. Hangarage is charged by footprint, so a mid-size jet costs several times what a piston single costs at the same field. Insurance is rated on hull value, crew experience and operating region. A management fee applies if the aircraft is run by a management company rather than by the owner directly.
Then come the subscriptions that never appear in a purchase negotiation: navigation database updates, satellite communications and cabin connectivity, flight planning and tracking services, and continuing airworthiness management.
Maintenance programmes change the arithmetic
Engine and airframe maintenance on jets is normally bought as an hourly programme rather than paid as incurred. The programmes named in listings include Rolls-Royce CorporateCare, the Honeywell Maintenance Service Plan, the Pratt and Whitney Canada Eagle Service Plan, Williams TAP and the independent JSSI programmes.
An enrolled aircraft costs more to buy and less to run, because the next engine event is prepaid. An unenrolled aircraft is cheaper on the asking price and carries the full exposure. Programmes are transferable subject to a transfer fee and the programme's own conditions, so read the enrolment letter rather than the advert.
Part 91 or Part 135
A privately operated jet on the FAA register flies under Part 91. Placing it on a charter certificate under Part 135, or under a European operator's air operator certificate, brings additional inspection, crew and equipment requirements, and it changes the maintenance cost even when the owner is the one flying. Settle which one applies before valuing the aircraft, because a Part 91 aircraft is not automatically eligible for commercial use.
What to ask for before you make an offer
- The last 24 months of maintenance invoices, not a summary.
- Programme enrolment letters for every engine and the auxiliary power unit, with the transfer terms.
- The next-due list for calendar and hourly inspections, with an estimated cost against each.
- The damage history, and documentation for any repair carried out under a structural repair manual or an engineering order.
- Confirmation of the currency the price is quoted in, and whether it is exclusive of VAT or import duty.
